Not just the usual big banks taking over little banks or big telephone companies taking over little telephone companies. No, these articles make it seem like a group of rich people get together and think they can milk a bloated cash cow before it goes belly up! In that spirit, I have compiled a list of my six favorite equity firm buyouts of popular brands in the last ten years.

- AMC Entertainment Apollo Management and JP Morgan Chase, $1.67 Billion
- Toys R US KKR Group, Bain Capital, and Vornado Realty Trust, $6.6 billion
- Dollar General Stores Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. $6.9 Billion
- DaimlerChrysler Cerberus Capital Management, $7.4 Billion
- Hertz Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Inc., The Carlyle Group, and Merrill Lynch Global Private Equity, $15 billion
A private equity firm is an investment company where private investors pool money to make big purchases, and hopefully earn big returns. A minimum investment in a private equity firm is usually at least $100,000.00. Why, you ask, would any of these equity firms buy a blue-chip type company? Money! They get all the cash flow of the company they buy, which they can improve dramatically with massive layoffs and other short-term cash solutions. Also, and perhaps more importantly, they can borrow money using the name of the company they just bought. They get to decide where to put all that borrowed money which, indecently, is usually right back into their own pockets! Now, don’t go saying I think all these takeovers are bad. Sometimes, the group goes into the purchase thinking they can fix the business, and re-sell it or take it public again for a profit. Check out the recent history of Burger King for more on that. More often than not, though, the buyout is of a company that is hemorrhaging losses and look for whoever can fill their pockets the most and the fastest.
