In Michael Gerber's newest book, Awakening the Entrepreneur Within, he gives five realities of the Entrepreneur. Number 4 is the reality that an Entrepreneur measures success by business growth. He says, "To be caught up in a slow growth business is to be doomed to show up every day to perform in a show nobody enjoys." How true that is. How many small businesses are on the verge of closing shop year after year, but stay open anyway? You started as an entrepreneur, but somewhere along the way you became a regular employee of your own company. Here is some advice to kick-start the dreaming again:
  1. If you wrote a business plan when you started, re-read it. What were your goals? What was your vision for the company? What did you want to achieve personally?
  2. Read a book, such as Jump Start your Brain, to foster your creativity. Take the advice within the book and actively participate as you read by completing the various activities.
  3. Invent a new company or two, just for kicks. Come up with some great ideas and write them down. Get your brain going in that business direction.
  4. Go back and re-evaluate the business you own. What would need to happen to make it a success? What would need to happen to make it a failure. Take some time to come up with some exit-criteria- determine when you need to cut your losses and start fresh.
  5. Use your new fire and enthusiasm to breath new life into your business. New ideas, fresh approaches, and better sales methods can bring some immediate satisfaction and get you headed in the right direction again.
Its easy to forget that we are the ones in charge of our business. We need to make conscious decisions about everything and quit repeating the same cycle every day. Mike Freeman Pursue Business Advisors
